Curious love story: gay couple moves to Sicily, just like the ex-wife

“Yes I do.” Randy Allen and Cindy Nannarelli said these words to each other in California in the 1970s. They were both only 21 years old at the time and had been a couple for three years. They both got married, even though Randy Allen had recently come out to Cindy Nannarelli.

According to Cindy Nannarelli, marriage was a logical conclusion for both of them: “For us it was like, ‘We have to be together because we have so much fun.’ And we take care of each other.’ And for us that meant getting married,” she told CNN.

The marriage lasts three years. Then the divorce came and they separated. Curious: Today – almost 50 years later – both live in Noto, Sicily, both with new men by their side.

“We have to live somewhere else”

Cindy Nannarelli met her current husband while traveling in Europe in 1978. They married. The American moved to Florence, the birthplace of her new husband. Contact with her old flame Randy Allen faded. A business trip to Germany allowed Randy Allen to travel to Florence to visit Cindy Nannarelli and her partner in the late 1990s. Italy left a big impression on him at the time.

In 2006, Randy Allen met his own Prince Charming and he also married again. After that, the two couples saw each other again and again. Sometimes in Italy, sometimes in the US. Then came 2016. Donald Trump (71) was elected the new American president. A shock for Randy Allen. “We woke up and couldn’t believe it had happened,” he told CNN. Allen and his partner are considering emigrating. Where? Italy! They find a home in Noto, Sicily. The two did not hesitate and bought it for approximately 90,000 euros (84,000 francs).

“The first months were lonely”

Meanwhile, Cindy Nannarelli serves as the pair’s project manager, making sure everything runs smoothly during the renovation and shuttling back and forth between Florence and Noto. She is looking for a property there herself. Eventually, Cindy Nannarelli and her husband found a property not far from the other two.

For Randy Allen and his husband, the start of the new phase of life is not so easy. The two move into the new home during the height of the pandemic. “So the first few months were a bit lonely.”

They question their decision to leave America. But they persevered – and to this day they still don’t regret it. “I will soon be 70 years old. How many years are left, twenty at best? I think this is the right choice for me at this time,” explains Randy Allen. He also has only good words for Cindy Nannarelli and her husband: “You and I and our husbands are a family.” (mgf)
