Major setback: American Republicans fail with impeachment plan

class=”sc-cffd1e67-0 iQNQmc”>

The motion failed with 214 votes in favor and 216 against. The Republican majority leader in the House of Representatives must accept defeat.

Republicans in the US House of Representatives initially failed in their attempts to oust Democratic Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. A narrow majority of MPs voted against a corresponding request for such a procedure on Tuesday evening (local time). Although Republicans have a narrow majority of representatives in the House of Representatives, they were unable to get their plan passed. Individual Republican representatives joined Democrats in voting against it. The result was close to 214 votes to 216.

House Republican Speaker Mike Johnson had previously expressed optimism that the bill would pass. For him and his party, the vote means a bitter defeat. Immediately after the vote, Johnson’s spokesman announced

Minister as enemy

The Secretary of Homeland Security is an enemy of many Republicans. They accuse President Joe Biden’s Democrats of losing control over the protection of the US southern border given the large number of immigrants. Regarding migration and border security, Republicans accuse the Cuban-born minister of deliberately and systematically refusing to comply with applicable laws. The 64-year-old also knowingly provided false information and placed his political preferences above compliance with the law. The Democrats, on the other hand, accuse the Republicans of a maneuver motivated by party politics.

If there is an impeachment trial, it would be the first trial of a member of the U.S. Cabinet in nearly 150 years. After approval in the House of Representatives, the Senate, as the second chamber of Congress, would have to decide whether the minister would be removed from office. President Biden’s Democrats have a narrow majority there. It is therefore unlikely that Mayorkas can ultimately be removed from office.

However, an impeachment proceeding in an election year would draw even more attention to the issue of migration and border security. Biden, who, like his likely Republican challenger Donald Trump, wants to participate in the elections again, is coming under increasing pressure over the issue. On the one hand, his opponents are propelling him forward in the election campaign. On the other hand, Republicans in Congress are blocking further US aid to Ukraine, which is under attack by Russia, in the dispute over a stricter asylum policy. (SDA)
