The Myanmar army kills 60 people in an airstrike

At least 60 people have been killed in an airstrike by the Myanmar government army in the northern Kachin region. About 100 were also injured. This is reported by the KIO, a movement fighting for independence in the region.

The attack was at a concert celebrating the 62nd anniversary of the movement. Al Jazeera news channel reports that at least three Myanmar warplanes were involved in the attack.

The United Nations Office in Myanmar is shocked and speaks of excessive and unacceptable violence.

Myanmar has been struggling with conflict for decades. Violence erupted after the military overthrow of the democratically elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February last year. Almost 2,400 people have reportedly died since that coup. Many thousands of people were arrested.

A meeting between pro-independence movements and the Myanmar government is scheduled for this week in Indonesia.
