“Monumental change”: 19 percent emissions drop in the EU President Aliyev wants to secure power in Azerbaijan with early elections

Emissions in the EU’s energy sector fell more sharply last year than ever before, according to an analysis.

The 19 percent drop in emissions is partly due to the sharp decline in electricity generation from coal and gas, according to a report published on Wednesday by the think tank Ember. Accordingly, electricity generation from coal has fallen by 26 percent and that from gas by 15 percent, meaning that for the first time fossil fuel generation accounts for less than a third of electricity in the EU. In addition, the demand for electricity has fallen.

According to the information, wind and solar energy continued to increase. According to the analysis, they will together generate a record 27 percent of the EU’s electricity in 2023 – more than a quarter for the first time. According to the analysis, wind energy generated 18 percent of the EU’s electricity, equivalent to 475 terawatt hours and France’s entire electricity needs. For the first time, wind energy was responsible for more than gas (17 percent). Overall, the share of renewable energy sources in electricity generation in the EU has risen to a record 44 percent.

“Monumental change”

“The EU’s energy sector is in the midst of monumental change,” says expert Sarah Brown of Ember. “Fossil fuels play a smaller role than ever before, because a system with wind and solar energy as the backbone is in sight.”

In addition, according to experts, the declining demand for electricity has also contributed to the decline in electricity generation from fossil fuels. This decline in demand is not expected to repeat itself in the coming years as electrification increases. “With increasing electrification through heat pumps, electric vehicles and electrolyzers, the EU will enter a new era of increasing electricity demand,” said Ember’s Dave Jones. “Renewable energy must keep pace with this increase in demand to achieve the emissions reductions needed for a safe climate.” (sda/dpa)
