More than two months: Viennese wrongly imprisoned in Serbian prison

Shock in Vienna: 31-year-old David P. is wrongfully held in a Serbian prison for two months. An AI facial recognition program mistakenly thought he was the boss of a Serbian money counterfeiting gang.

Arrested during the holidays

Without his knowledge, an international arrest warrant is issued for David P. in September 2023. When he wanted to travel with his family to his old home country of Serbia in October, he was arrested during the trip. He then spent two months in a “horror prison,” as he described the prison to the Crown. He was allegedly locked up in a small cell of 18 square meters together with fifteen other serious criminals. He admitted to the Crown that he often feared for his life.

Writing a diary is his salvation

During his hatched hell, David P. starts writing a diary – and thus puts his fears on paper. In it he also writes about various attacks he had to endure: “A fellow prisoner suddenly attacked me for no reason and hit my Adam’s apple with his fist. I can no longer eat or drink; Swallowing hurts terribly.” David P. now wants to publish his diary, also to help him deal psychologically with what he has experienced. It is not yet known when we can read his story in detail.
