She just wanted to take care of her grandson (11) and was mauled by two dogs. Esther M.* (†68) died on Saturday in a terrible attack in Jaywick, Great Britain. The animals are said to be two American bullies. The breed originated in the US in the late 1980s from a cross between the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier. The goal was an even more muscular dog.
So Esther M. didn’t stand a chance when the animals rushed towards her. The dogs are said to belong to her daughter’s (39) ex-husband. The older woman had always been afraid of animals. “My mother told him that the dogs were dangerous and quite aggressive,” eldest daughter Sonia M. told the BBC.
When Esther M. came to visit on Saturday, the ex-husband left the house and left the grandson, the grandson and the dogs alone. Shortly afterwards, the six puppies that were also in the house got in each other’s way and started fighting. To distract the dogs, the older woman allegedly took a broom and placed it between the puppies. Apparently too much for the bullying parents. They attacked and bit Esther M.
According to Sonia M., her cousin “ran out of the house screaming” to get help. Neighbors tried to push the dogs off the old lady with shovels. Without success. When rescuers arrived, it was already too late. The two dogs were shot dead by police shortly afterwards. Her daughter’s ex-husband was arrested.
This is not the first fatal attack of this breed. According to the Bullywatch website, American XL bullies, other bullies or mixed breeds are now responsible for the majority of dog attacks in Britain. The group cites 11 deaths and three additional suspected deaths since 2021.
The British government has therefore responded. Keeping animals without a permit has been banned in Great Britain and Wales since last Thursday. Strict requirements apply to exceptions.
Owners must prove that their XL Bully has been neutered before June 30; for puppies up to one year old, this is required by the end of 2024 at the latest. It is also necessary for pets to take out liability insurance – and that the dogs have a microchip. Dog owners risk up to fourteen years in prison if their animals attack them.
Animal rights activists criticize that a ban will not solve the problems. On the contrary, the dangers can increase because dogs do not get enough exercise. In addition, there are too few veterinarians and homes to cope with the possible increase in castrations, euthanasia and abandoned XL bullies. (jmh/SDA)
