After a 23-year-old allegedly beat a Jewish student in Berlin until he was hospitalized, the ruling mayor responded.
“This vicious attack leaves me stunned,” Kai Wegner wrote on the X platform, formerly Twitter, on Monday. “Jewish people should feel safe everywhere in Berlin – including in our universities!”
A 23-year-old student allegedly punched a 30-year-old Jewish fellow student several times in the face in Berlin-Mitte on Saturday evening and eventually kicked the man as he lay on the ground, police said.
Citing previous investigations and statements, investigators said a dispute had preceded it. The 30-year-old expressed pro-Israeli views on social media, while the younger man was said to be pro-Palestinian.
Wegner also said he expects university management to take consistent action against anti-Semitism and actively intervene “if such developments come to light.” The head of government wished the injured person a recovery.
There was initially no new status with the police on Monday. A police spokeswoman said on Sunday that the suspect will be given the opportunity to comment on what happened. Officers are also evaluating possible evidence, it was said.
The 23-year-old initially reportedly fled, but investigators later found him at home and searched the apartment. They confiscated the man’s mobile phone, among other things. State security is investigating. (SDA)
