On January 19, a landlord placed an advertisement for an apartment in Munich on the platform “WG-Gesucht.de”. At first this seemed very normal: a two-room apartment of 60 square meters was offered for around 1,000 euros per month.
However, interested parties became suspicious when they heard the description. As the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” reports, the landlord demanded that “no children under the age of three move in initially and that there is currently no pregnancy.” Even a viewing appointment required a medical certificate proving that she was not pregnant.
The case caused headaches not only for those looking for an apartment, but also for Munich’s tenants’ association. According to the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” such demands have never been made in the past.
Although there is clear discrimination, a lawsuit based on the general equal opportunities law in Germany would probably not be successful. Landlords with fewer than 50 apartments do not have to take all discrimination criteria into account. The advertiser falls into this category.
The ad did not remain online for long. As the operators of “WG-Gesucht.de” confirm, the ad was removed just three hours after activation. The landlord’s motives remain unclear.
In addition to advertisements with strange conditions, there are also many fake advertisements floating around the Internet. 66-year-old Francesco Scilingo from Biel BE was almost robbed of 2,000 francs while looking for an apartment. (obf)
