The accident took place in the west of the Central American country when a van, a motorcycle and a truck collided. “Eleven people died, nine Cubans and two Guatemalans,” the public prosecutor’s office in the city of San Bautista said.
The accident took place in the Suchitepéquez region, about 120 kilometers from the capital Guatemala City. According to Guatemala’s migration institute, the migrants were in transit to the US. Three women were among the dead. The two victims from Guatemala are the drivers of the van and the motorcycle.
Every year, hundreds of thousands of migrants attempt to enter the United States overland through Central America. According to official figures, more than half a million people, mainly Venezuelans, crossed the Darién jungle on the border with Colombia last year. Migrants also include people from other South American countries, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia.
