Whether it’s a tiny house, a converted van or the classic caravan: If you don’t want to live in a classic apartment, you have several options these days. So why not get on a plane, thought Jo Ann Ussery of Benoit, Mississippi, as CNN reports.
After her house was destroyed in a fire, her brother-in-law, who worked as an air traffic controller, told her about it. The beautician was immediately enthusiastic and bought an old Boeing 727 that would otherwise have ended up on the scrap heap. The plane was brought to their property and Ussery began the renovation. Ultimately, the inner workings of the Boeing had to be completely changed.
It took six months for the aircraft to be transformed into its new home. The result: 1,500 square meters of living space, three bedrooms, two bathrooms and even a whirlpool built into the cockpit. Sounds like luxury, but it didn’t cost much. A total of approximately 60,000 US dollars (52,000 francs).
Ussery’s story inspired Bruce Campbell, an electrical engineer with a private pilot’s license, to also build an airplane house. He had heard about the converted Boeing on the radio and was immediately fascinated. He investigated and got to work straight away. He bought a Boeing 727 for $100,000 and converted it to his own wishes.
In 2018, he almost bought a second plane — a 747-400 — but the deal fell through at the last minute because the airline, which Campbell declined to name, decided to keep the plane in service longer than expected. The engineer told CNN: “We had to put the project on hold.” Campbell receives regular visitors and even offers free nights on the plane.
Joe Axline, on the other hand, made his dream of two planes come true. He owns an MD-80 and a DC-9, located next to each other on a property in Brookshire, Texas. Axline has lived in MD-80 for over ten years and was divorced on April 1, 2011.
The DC-8 still needs to be renovated. Among other things, a cinema will be built. “I haven’t even put a quarter of a million dollars into the entire project,” says Axline. His children also lived on the plane for several years. They have now fledged and moved. “The only thing I miss here are windows that can be opened,” he explains.
If you want to sleep on a plane yourself, all you have to do is fly to Sweden or Costa Rica. Hotel Jumbo Stay is located on the grounds of Stockholm Arlanda Airport. There, guests can sleep in a converted Boeing 747. In Costa Rica, Hotel Costa Verde offers a fully renovated Boeing 727 for overnight stays. Two bedrooms, terrace with sea views included. (ymh)
