Teenager gets life in prison for murder of trans girl: “I liked it”

Scarlett J. and Eddie R. planned the brutal act over a long period of time, entertaining each other’s murder fantasies.

Why did the trans girl Brianna Ghey (†16) have to die? This question still concerns her family today. And the reasons given by their killers, 16-year-old Scarlett J.* and 16-year-old Eddie R.*, are shockingly banal.

The murder had shocked England: the then 15-year-old teenagers lured the 16-year-old to a park and suddenly struck: Brianna’s body had 28 knife wounds.

It was then revealed that the two teenagers had been planning the crime for a long time. According to the court, it was Scarlett J. who inflicted the most injuries on Brianna and planned the crime down to the last detail – out of sadistic curiosity. The girl admitted to a social worker that it was ‘exciting’.

She was afraid Brianna would leave her

She was “sexually aroused” when she planned the murder. She thought, “It would be fun.” But the main reason was that she was afraid that Brianna would leave her as a friend – and that they could be together forever.

She actually planned to take part of the girl’s body as a ‘souvenir’, but was then interrupted by walkers who were in the park.

Eddie R. did not stop his colleague and joined in the bloody act – for an equally pathetic reason: he was in love with another girl and hoped that Scarlett would help him win her over.

Teenagers can stay behind bars forever

This all became known at Manchester Crown Court when Judge Amanda Yip announced the verdict: the two teenagers were sentenced to life in prison and could only hope for release after 22 and 20 years respectively. “How long you will remain in prison will not be decided today,” the judge said, warning that the two could remain behind bars forever.

Judge Yip said Scarlett J. was motivated by “a deep desire to kill” and that the messages she sent to her accomplice revealed her “sadistic motives.” When the verdict was announced, she addressed the 16-year-old: “Your motivation, Scarlett, was to make your fantasies come true. The news shows that you wanted to convey pain and fear to a real victim.”

“You dehumanized Brianna by constantly calling her ‘it.’Judge Yip announces the verdict.

To Eddie R., Judge Yip said: “Eddie, although your motives may not have been the same, you knew what Scarlett wanted to do and why. You understood her desire to see Brianna suffer. You actively participated in this brutal murder, even though you knew the sadistic motives behind it.”

Yip also believes Eddie was partly motivated by transphobia. “You dehumanized Brianna by constantly calling her ‘it.’

It is unusual for teenagers’ names to be revealed in court. On the day the verdict was announced, the judge decided to lift the ban on reporting the names of the convicted.

The country is horrified by the “despicable and cowardly murder”, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s spokesman told journalists on Friday, shortly before the verdict was announced. The Head of Government shares this sentiment and his thoughts are with Brianna’s family. (neo)
