A suspected supporter of the Islamic State (IS) jihadist militia who was in custody in Austria escaped on Friday. “The 19-year-old Austrian Mahdy C. fled on February 2 around 10:20 am as part of an investigation appointment at a hospital in Vienna,” according to the accompanying police report.
“On behalf of the public prosecutor’s office in Wiener Neustadt, the suspect is being searched using a European arrest warrant,” the police continued. During the search, a photo was published.
As Austrian media report, the man was initially jailed for theft and bodily harm. Pre-trial detention was ordered immediately after his release in January. There were “strong suspicions in connection with investigations into terrorist crimes,” the Austrian news agency APA reported. “The reasons for detention were the risk of committing a crime and the risk of absconding.”
In connection with the escape, the Justice Department told the APA there was evidence of “official misconduct by individual employees.” A bailiff was injured during his flight.
