A mafia boss who escaped from a high-security prison in his home country of Italy a year ago has been captured on the French island of Corsica in the Mediterranean Sea. Marco Raduano (40) has been arrested in Bastia, the authorities of both countries announced on Friday. He was on the list of most wanted criminals of the European police authority Europol.
In addition to Raduano, his ‘right-hand man’ Gianluigi Troiano was also arrested in Spain during a nationwide operation. He was arrested near Granada. “The arrest of two dangerous fugitives abroad represents a new blow to crime,” Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, 60, told the online network X.
Raduano heads the ‘Società Foggiana’, a mafia gang from Foggia in Apulia that is considered extremely brutal. He escaped from the maximum security wing of a prison in Sardinia in February last year. Surveillance cameras later showed him climbing the prison wall with knotted sheets. According to Europol, the 40-year-old was serving a 24-year prison sentence. He is accused of murder, extortion and drug trafficking, among other things. (AFP)
