Rebuilding Ukraine requires a strategy similar to that of the post-WWII Marshall Plan. This is what Chancellor Scholz and EU Commission President von der Leyen write in a guest article in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
According to the two politicians, supporting Ukraine is also in the interest of the European Union. “Ukraine also defends the international rules-based order, the basis of our peaceful coexistence and well-being around the world,” they write. “So if we support Ukraine, we are building our future and that of our common Europe.”
Scholz and von der Leyen call the reconstruction of the Russian-occupied country a lengthy task that must begin now. “Although one has to be careful about historical comparisons, this is nothing short of a Marshall Plan for the 21st century.”
The timing of Scholz and von der Leyen’s plea is no coincidence. A conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine with representatives of German and Ukrainian business begins today in Berlin. The summit will be opened by Scholz and Ukrainian Prime Minister Shmyhal.
Von der Leyen announced on Friday that the European Union wants to support Ukraine with 1.5 billion euros a month in the coming year. EU finance ministers have yet to work out the details of this new aid.
