In Brazil, a politician shot at the police when they wanted to arrest him at home. Two officers were injured and taken to the hospital.
Roberto Jefferson, until last year chairman of the PTB workers’ party and longstanding member of the Bundestag, has been under house arrest since the beginning of this year. Among other things, he had issued threats against judges of the Brazilian Supreme Court.
According to the judiciary, Jefferson has repeatedly violated the terms of his case in recent years, for example by comparing a judge to a prostitute in a video on social media. Therefore, the police went to his apartment in the state of Rio de Janeiro with an arrest warrant.
However, Jefferson refused to surrender. During an hours-long police encirclement, he threw a grenade at officers and shot a police car. Two officers were injured by shrapnel.
In the end, Jefferson was arrested. He was arrested. In a statement, he says he wanted to set an example by shooting the police car. “Resist oppression and tyranny. God bless Brazil.”
The case also embarrasses President Bolsonaro, a week before the second and crucial round of the presidential elections, according to Brazilian media. Jefferson is considered an ally of Bolsonaro and political opponents emphasize this by posting photos of them together on social media.
Bolsonaro has responded by distancing himself from Jefferson. Anyone who shoots at police officers is a criminal, he said in a statement.
