West of the Korean peninsula, South and North Korea have fired warning shots at each other’s ships. The countries accuse each other that the ships have crossed the territorial waters border.
According to the South Korean army, a North Korean merchant ship entered an area belonging to South Korea during the night. The Navy then fired warning shots. The North Korean ship would then have headed north again.
A little later, North Korea fired ten warning shots. According to North Korea, this was because a South Korean naval vessel was sailing in North Korean waters. As far as is known, no injuries have been reported in the incidents.
North and South Korea have been officially at war for decades. Recently, hostilities have increased. According to the country, North Korea has conducted a series of missile tests in recent weeks in response to “provocative” army exercises that the neighboring country is conducting together with Japan and the United States.
