In Australia, a swimmer was attacked by a shark and taken to hospital with serious leg injuries. The attack happened on Monday in Sydney Harbour, where the woman was swimming near a jetty in Elizabeth Bay, police said. According to the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper, the victim was Lauren O’Neill (29).
Residents came to the swimmer’s aid. “I came home from work and sat on the couch,” Michael Porter told reporters. “I heard a faint cry for help.” Outside he saw a woman trying to climb out of the water using the ladder. Her leg hung limp behind her and the water was stained red from her blood, Porter explained. The woman was clearly caught by the animal and “bitten extremely,” he added.
A veterinarian who lived nearby provided first aid. The woman was in stable condition, according to St. Vincent Hospital. She was scheduled to have surgery later today. Examination of the bite revealed that the attacker was likely a bull shark. It was the first shark attack in Sydney Harbor in 15 years. In February 2009, an Australian Navy diver fended off an attack from a bull shark that bit him on the arm and leg. (AFP)
