Patten was invited by Israel’s Foreign Ministry to gain a first-hand impression of the scale of atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7 and to pass this information on to relevant international bodies, the ministry in Jerusalem said on Monday. The background to the invitation is that UN bodies such as UN Women have long ignored reports of sexual violence against women during the Hamas attack.
The organization UN Women wrote in an X-post just eight weeks after the Hamas attack and after massive criticism in early December: “We clearly condemn Hamas’ brutal attacks on Israel on October 7. We are alarmed by the many reports of gender-based atrocities and sexual violence during these attacks.”
During her visit to Israel, Patten will meet survivors of the massacres, witnesses, victim support experts and representatives of police and security forces who will tell her about Hamas’s sexual violence against women and men, the ministry stressed. The reports should be reflected in the next United Nations annual report on sexual violence in conflict zones, Israel’s Foreign Ministry stressed.
On October 7, Hamas terrorists committed the worst massacre in Israel’s history. More than 1,200 people were killed. About 240 hostages were taken to Gaza. Reports of sadistic violence on the day of the massacre are also fueling concerns among young women who remain under the control of the terrorist organization. (SDA)
