Former US president Donald Trump (77) has been ordered to pay $83.3 million in the defamation case against columnist E. Jean Carroll (80). The jury in the New York civil trial reached their decision Friday after nearly three hours of deliberation and found in favor of Carroll.
In an interview with the New York Times, the American has already revealed what she will do with the Trump millions: “I will not waste a cent of it,” said the 80-year-old.
She would like to treat herself, or rather her dogs, to a little luxury: “I will now be able to buy high-quality dog food,” she joked. Otherwise she wants to do something good with it. However, Carroll is not specific on this point.
Trump described the verdict on his online network Truth Social as “absolutely ridiculous.” The 77-year-old favorite for the Republican presidential nomination announced that he would appeal. Therefore, it will probably take some time before the writer receives the millions.
Carroll called the verdict a “major victory for every woman who has stood up when she has been pushed down, and a major defeat for every bully who has tried to hold a woman down.”
Trump was ordered to pay $7.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in so-called punitive damages, among other things. The jury found that Trump acted maliciously because he repeatedly denigrated Carroll over the years.
Last year, Trump was sentenced in an initial trial to five million dollars in damages and damages for sexual abuse and defamation of the journalist. Carroll had sued Trump twice, which is why there were two lawsuits.
The now 80-year-old accuses Trump of raping her in a dressing room at the luxury Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York in 1996.
