At least 42 dead after attacks in South Sudan UN Palestinian Aid Agency under enormous pressure – the night update

At least 42 people have been killed in several attacks in South Sudan’s Abyei region. As the UN mission Unisfa announced in a press release on Sunday, a UN peacekeeper also died.

The oil-rich region has seen repeated outbreaks of violence between rival ethnic groups. Furthermore, both South Sudan and Sudan claim the region as their own. Since 2011, Abyei has therefore been governed by authorities composed of officials from both countries.

According to the statement, the current attacks were caused by “intercommunal conflicts.” As a result, numerous civilians were taken to a UN base, which was then also attacked. The exact number of dead, injured and displaced people is still being determined, the report said. The UN mission called on the South Sudanese government to launch an investigation and hold the perpetrators accountable. (sda/dpa)
