Thousands go on a climate march in Brussels, Monet targets activists in Potsdam

Thousands of people take part in a climate march in Brussels. The procession started in Brussels-North and will end in the Cinquantenaire Park. According to the Brussels police, there are around 25,000 participants.

The evening begins with speeches and performances in Cinquantenaire Park. The march aims to draw more attention to the climate problem and the current energy crisis.

“Energy crisis and climate crisis go hand in hand”

The protest is an initiative of the climate coalition consisting of various environmental organizations, trade unions, youth organizations and civil movements. “The energy crisis and the climate crisis belong together,” a spokesman for the climate coalition told the Belgian newspaper De Morgen. “Nature and the bill share a common enemy: fossil fuels.”

The coalition is calling for more taxes on the profits of energy companies and better wage agreements for housing and energy. They also draw attention to a more sustainable food system.

Climate conference in Egypt

The reason for the march is the international climate conference that will take place in November in the Egyptian city of Sharm-el-Sheikh. Today, attention was also drawn to climate problems in other places in Europe.

At the Barberini Museum in the German city of Potsdam, activists tossed mashed potatoes onto a protective glass plate LesMeules, a painting by Claude Monet. Then they glued themselves to the floor. In London, the Abbey Road junction was blocked by Just Stop Oil activists, causing a traffic jam.

Last week in London, two activists from the same climate movement smeared tomato soup on Vincent van Gogh’s sunflowers. A glass plate also prevented damage to the screen.
