Escalation in the Middle East: Iran’s Revolutionary Guards arrest foreign oil tankers

This ship was stopped and 14 crew members were arrested.

Naval units of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) detained another foreign oil tanker in the Persian Gulf on Sunday for alleged smuggling. The tanker, flying the flag of an Oceanian country, was carrying two million liters of illegal gas oil, an IRGC naval commander in the southwestern Iranian port of Bushehr said. The 14 foreign crew members, mostly Asians, were also arrested, the IRGC said, according to Tasnim news agency.

There have been repeated incidents in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz involving Revolutionary Guard units and foreign oil tankers over alleged fuel smuggling. According to Iran, the ships are being held by court order. The oil is seized. The Strait of Hormuz, an approximately 55 kilometer wide strait between Iran and Oman, is considered one of the most important shipping lanes for global oil exports. (SDA)
