Two activists threw soup on the painting of Mona Lisa in the Louvre in Paris on Sunday morning. This was reported by the CLPress news agency, among others. Leonardo da Vinci’s world-famous painting from the 16th century was unharmed. A pane of bulletproof glass protects the painting.
The two women shouted: “What is more important than the right to healthy and sustainable food?” And further: “Our agricultural system is sick. Our farmers are dying at work.” Just like in Germany, there are currently farmers’ protests in France.
Immediately after the attack, museum staff intervened and covered the events and the activists’ speeches with portable walls.
With an estimated value of $896 million, the Mona Lisa is the most expensive painting in the world. However, because it is owned by the Louvre, its true value cannot be determined.
It is not the first attack on oil paintings. The Mona Lisa was the subject of vandalism as early as 1956. At that moment, an unknown person poured acid on the portrait. The photo was heavily occupied at the time. The same year, a homeless Bolivian tourist also threw a stone at the portrait.
In 2005, protective measures for the Mona Lisa were increased. Since then, the photo has been stored behind tempered glass in a transparent box that ensures ideal temperature and humidity. In 2009, a Russian woman threw an empty teacup on the display case, causing minor scratches. In 2022, a man wearing a woman’s wig tried to break the glass protection. Then he spread cake on it. The Mona Lisa was not damaged. (GF)
