Former US President Donald Trump has been awarded new damages of 83.3 million dollars (approximately 77 million euros) in a second defamation trial in New York. A jury decided this unanimously on Friday, the American media reported unanimously.
It was the second civil lawsuit that 80-year-old American author E. Jean Carroll had filed against Trump. The amount is many times higher than the more than ten million dollars that Carroll is demanding.
At the end of the first trial in May, a New York jury found it proven that Trump had assaulted Carroll in a luxury New York department store in 1996, sexually assaulted him and later defamed him. The jury then awarded the writer a compensation of five million dollars (approximately 4.65 million euros).
Judge Lewis Kaplan had ruled before the start of the second trial that Trump’s later comments were defamatory. The jury now only had to decide on the amount of damages Trump had to pay.
Trump made several personal appearances in the second trial – unlike in the first – and attracted attention through numerous comments, which is why the judge had threatened to bar him in the meantime.
The 77-year-old is considered the Republicans’ most promising candidate in the presidential elections in November. However, he is currently dealing with the courts in many different cases. Trump often uses the court dates as a kind of campaign event. (dabbing/sda/dpa)
