In Vietnam, a man with a live tiger in his car was arrested by police. The big cat, which weighed more than 200 kilos, was discovered in an extremely small iron cage that the 43-year-old had stored in his van, the state-run newspaper ‘Tuoi Tre’ reported on Tuesday.
Images circulating in the media showed that the tiger had virtually no room to move.
It was said that the man was behaving suspiciously and that is why the police asked him to stop. He then fled and was only stopped after a chase. The Vietnamese admitted that he would transport the tiger from the town of Dong Ha to the Huong Hoa district on the border with Laos for the equivalent of 103 francs.
In the Southeast Asian country, parts of wild animals – in addition to tiger bones, bear bile and various monkey parts – are used in traditional medicine. The trade is booming: In recent years, Vietnamese police have uncovered numerous cases related to the illegal breeding, trading and killing of tigers.
The predators are listed as “endangered” on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Laws in Vietnam allow prison sentences of up to fifteen years for illegal wildlife trafficking. (sda/dpa)
