A major earthquake struck the border area between China and Kyrgyzstan on Monday. As the U.S. Earthquake Monitoring Service (USGS) announced, the center of the magnitude 7.0 earthquake was in northwest China’s Xinjiang province. Initially nothing was known about possible victims.
The People’s Republic is repeatedly rocked by earthquakes, some of which are devastating. In December, 148 people were killed in a major earthquake in China’s Gansu province.
It was the deadliest earthquake in China since 2014, when more than 600 people were killed in the southwestern province of Yunnan. In 2008, more than 87,000 people died in a 7.9 magnitude earthquake in Sichuan province. (AFP)
