As stiffly as he conducted his presidential campaign, Ron DeSantis (45) pulled out the white curtain on Sunday evening and said goodbye to the Republican primaries for the high office in the White House. The Floridian has never been a gifted speaker — and is anything but a charismatic campaigner.
He personally visited 98 of Iowa’s 99 counties – and failed to defeat his main opponent Donald Trump in any of them. The governor of the ‘Sunshine State’ caused the biggest stir not with his witty statements, but with his supposedly hidden heels in his cowboy boots, which were supposed to make him look taller (a trick that former French President Nicolas Sarkozy had used for years). ).
Well: DeSantis is out of the race. Hardly anyone really mourns him. And yet his departure could have a decisive impact on who will rule the world’s most powerful country for the next four years.
DeSantis’ withdrawal is an unexpectedly early boost for Donald Trump (77), who is already miles ahead of his only remaining party rival Nikki Haley (52). The ex-Iraq veteran and father of three DeSantis is still in his “Goodbye” speech behind Trump. He is “miles superior” to the current incumbent president.
Haley, the only serious Republican alternative to Trump, represents – according to DeSantis – the insider class, the political decision makers who served and governed the elites without bypassing the concerns of the little guy.
According to virtually all polls, Trump was unbeatable before Haley, even without the few percent from DeSantis that would now have to be transferred to his account. With DeSantis’ support, the Republican primaries are now effectively over. The presidential race will be decided between the same old politicians as four years ago.
Biden or Trump? That is the only question that America and the world are interested in right now in view of the election campaign. And perhaps who Trump will nominate as his vice presidential candidate. According to the betting companies, it is almost certain that it is a woman.
Nikki Haley awaits the New Hampshire primary tomorrow. The defeat against Trump is likely to become glaringly obvious – and Haley is also likely to withdraw by mid-week.
This is a political shame for America. Not just because neither of the two major parties has managed to step out of the shadows of their aging warhorses. But mainly because substantive debates about the path that the still most powerful country in the world should take in the future will fail.
Trump vs. Biden: This will be – as many American insiders in Switzerland say – a brutal race, a personal vendetta, an exchange of blows between two men who should have said goodbye to their well-deserved retirement long ago.
For the next generation of American leaders, the wait remains a long one until 2028, when hopefuls Ron DeSantises and Nikki Haleys will likely cast themselves back into the spotlight. Until then, the Republican Party remains hostage to Donald Trump.
