Bodies found after plane crash near Costa Rica – the pilot was a Swiss duel for Downing Street: the new prime minister is called Rishi Sunak – or Boris Johnson

German entrepreneur Rainer Schaller, who founded the fitness chain McFit, is said to have been on board a missing private plane with his family. Bodies have now been found off the coast of Costa Rica.

Search teams found two dead after a private plane carrying five German passengers crashed off the coast of Costa Rica. The bodies of an adult and a child were found in the sea, Public Security Minister Jorge Torres said Saturday (local time) on Canal 6 TV. He also confirmed that the passengers were Germans, the pilots and therefore Swiss.

“There were five passengers and one pilot on the plane, a total of six people,” said Fernando Naranjo, director of the Civil Aviation Authority. German fitness entrepreneur and millionaire Rainer Schaller traveled by plane. Schaller is the founder of fitness chain McFit, and the 53-year-old also owns the well-known American chain Gold’s Gym with his company, which he took over in 2020 after it went bankrupt.

Also on board the plane were his partner Christiana Schikorsky and their children and another man named Marcus Kurreck, as reported by “Bild”. According to Costa Rican TV channel Teletica, the pilot was a Swiss person with the last name Lips.

Parts of the fuselage, seats and some pieces of luggage had previously been discovered about 28 kilometers from Limon Airport. “About 28 kilometers from Limón airport, we found remains in the sea that appear to belong to the aircraft,” said Coast Guard Chief Martín Arias. A video made available to local media by the Ministry of Security shows various backpacks and travel bags, among other things. According to reports from the television channel Teletica, US border guards also supported the search with a reconnaissance aircraft.

The plane disappeared Friday night on a flight from Mexico to Costa Rica. Communications were lost as the plane approached Limón airport by sea, the security ministry said. “The plane disappeared from radar about 40 kilometers from Limón airport. The machine was supposed to land at 6:58 p.m., we lost it at an altitude of 2000 feet,” said Naranjo, aeronautical director of aviation. That’s about 600 meters.

The search work was initially suspended due to adverse weather conditions. The Coast Guard and Airspace Surveillance Agency later resumed the search. A command center was set up at Limón airport to coordinate the search activities.

“We are aware of the matter,” the Foreign Ministry in Berlin said. “Our embassy in San Jose is in contact with the local authorities to clarify the matter.”

According to media reports, the missing plane was a Piaggio P.180 Avanti business jet. She started in the afternoon in Palenque in the Mexican state of Chiapas. The ruined city of the Maya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important archaeological sites in Mexico. (con/sda/dpa)
