Noise like a plane taking off: Parts of the US are facing a tidal wave of crickets. Naturalizations are made easier in Germany

American scientists expect a flood of up to a trillion cicadas in the Midwest and Southeast of the United States in late spring. Two populations called “Brood

Both populations therefore spend most of their lives underground. “Breeding According to USA Today, the strongest performance of both is expected from mid-May to late June.

A few days after hatching, male crickets begin making rattling sounds of up to 90 decibels to mark their territory and attract mating. The large number of insects allows noise levels comparable to those of a plane taking off, writes the New York Times.

The scientists said the crickets are not immediately dangerous to humans or animals. Instead, they serve as a food source for birds and are a good fertilizer after death. (sda/dpa)
