Rat plague: Munich wants to make the animals sterile “Back doors” in cranes? The US Congress is reviewing ABB’s ties with China

The rat plague in Munich must be combated with a new method – without poisoning.

They are in parks, running around in train stations and spreading through the Munich city area – they are not welcome. We’re talking about rats. They seem to feel immediately at home in the city. Last November, t-online reported about a rat in a kebab shop at the Ostbahnhof in Munich, which had made itself comfortable on the worktop.

Until now, poison bait has been used to control rodents, but this method has not had much success. As Merkur reports, the ÖDP and Munich List faction has now submitted an application to the city council. This includes two points on rat control. The aim is to combat rats ‘more humanely’. The emphasis should be on prevention rather than poisoning. Liquid bait with contraceptive technology should be placed on the hot spots. The points of interest in question include the Nussbaum Park, the Viktualienmarkt and the area around the major train stations.

Male and female rats become infertile

These liquid baits are intended to reduce the rat population. The group suggests that the pilot project should run for about one to two years. If there are positive results, this contraceptive technology should be used across the board, the filing said. The milky liquid baits are said to contain active ingredients that render both male and female rats infertile. Moreover, they are not harmful to the environment and harmless to other animal species. “The rats do not have to suffer, but their population is still gradually declining,” the application says.

Simply poisoning animals with poisonous bait is neither promising nor compatible with animal welfare. In Munich, non-access-protected bait stations are currently being used again and again. An active ingredient that is often used is “Difenacoum”. However, it is very dangerous, as the factions explain. Not only for rats, but also for birds of prey and other animals that eat the bait.
