Police in western France have arrested a 13-year-old boy they say is responsible for hundreds of bomb threats that have rocked France since the fall. The Public Prosecution Service in Rennes announced on Thursday that an investigation has been launched against the student.
The student is said to have been blamed for bomb threats across France, especially against airports, courts and universities. The student admitted that he acted out of “playfulness” and without any political or religious intent.
Although the boy sent his threats via a foreign network connection, investigators tracked him down. Initially the entire family was taken into custody, but the parents and a brother were released as they had nothing to do with the case.
Repeated bomb threats had had serious consequences in France in the autumn, without the authorities being able to initially classify the threats. They started after the deadly terrorist attack by an Islamist on a teacher in northern France and the start of the Gaza war. No specific threats or political links have been identified. In many cases, young people were identified as responsible. According to police, videos of the school evictions were viewed millions of times on social networks. Threats sometimes caused airports to shut down for days, and the tourist attraction Palace of Versailles was also hit more often.
The student, who has since been arrested, is accused of making at least 380 bomb threats, the newspaper ‘Le Parisien’ reports. Prosecutor Philippe Astruc said that the threats already reliably attributed to the student, for example against the Rennes train station and two editorial offices of the regional newspaper “Ouest France”, took place between December 28 and January 10. The student, who has a serious personality disorder, has already been imposed a one-year educational measure. (sda/dpa)
