In 2021, a tragic cable car accident occurred in northern Italy.

The preliminary hearing in the trial over the Lake Maggiore cable car accident started on Wednesday in the northern Italian city of Verbania. Six people are accused of causing the accident that left fourteen people dead in 2021.

At the start of the preliminary hearing, the lawyer for the South Tyrolean cable car company Leitner announced that compensation would be paid to the families of the victims. In total, 50 people would be compensated with “a very significant amount”. This is because the insurance coverage is insufficient. In addition, the compensation should be understood as a “gesture of solidarity,” the Leitner company said in a press release.

Compensation for an Israeli boy, the only survivor of the accident, has yet to be determined.

The suspect is charged with negligent homicide

The defendants are the owner of cable car operator “Ferrovie del Mottarone”, the operations manager, the technical manager, the CEO of cable car manufacturer Leitner, Anton Seeber, and two other employees of the South Tyrolean company. They are accused of multiple counts of negligent homicide and grievous bodily harm due to negligence, endangering road safety and deliberately removing or neglecting safety measures against workplace accidents.

The Leitner company had confidence in it. Investigations so far have shown that the perpetrators do not belong to the company, the communiqué continues.

Drawstring was broken

On May 23, 2021, a cable car cabin fell into the depths near Stresa (IT) because the cable broke shortly before the mountain station. According to previous findings, safety clamps were blocked, preventing the gondola from braking in an emergency stop.

He raced through the valley, jumped from his suspension and crashed into a wooded area, where he became wedged against tree trunks on a steep slope. The only survivor of the accident was a five-year-old boy of Israeli descent. 14 people were killed.

The next court hearing is scheduled for February 27. Further negotiation dates will then be set until June. (SDA)
