Former US President Donald Trump (77) and Russian President Vladimir Putin (71) have met five times, according to the New York Times. The Washington Post speaks of at least sixteen further private conversations between Trump and Putin. “Putin and I get along great,” Trump said after his landslide victory in the Republican primaries in Iowa for the White House battle in November. Trump renewed his pledge to quickly end the war in Ukraine if he becomes US president again.
Trump claimed he could achieve “peace through strength.” He expressed confidence that he would bring Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (45) to the negotiating table to negotiate a peace agreement.
Trump expressed concern about the conflicts in Ukraine and Israel: “The situation in Ukraine is so terrible, the situation in Israel is so terrible. We will resolve them,” Trump said of the conflicts. “We will solve them very quickly,” Trump told his supporters in Des Moines, the Iowa capital. “I know President Putin very well, I know Zelensky well. I’ll bring her in, we’ll sort it out real quick.”
The war in Ukraine “should never have happened,” Trump said – suggesting the conflict “never should have happened” with him as US president. A claim repeatedly made by Trump, with which he is apparently not alone. “If Trump had been in power, Putin might not have attacked,” CH Media newspapers quoted US Senator Robert Portman (68) on Wednesday.
Portman is lobbying the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos for more aid to Ukraine. The politician with roots in Solothurn was asked whether the war had not even started with Trump as US president, as he had repeatedly claimed after the Russian attack on Ukraine.
“It’s hypothetical, but Putin may not have actually attacked Ukraine,” Porgman says. “Trump believes that with him as American president, Putin would have been afraid of a very strong response from the Americans in the event of an invasion. One thing is clear to me: Putin can only be deterred from his misdeeds with strong signals.”
“Unfortunately, for a long time the West has shown nothing but weakness,” Portman said. “This made possible the annexations of Crimea and Donbass.”
