A week before the Republican primaries in the American state of New Hampshire, the television stations ABC News and WMUR-TV have canceled the sixth TV match between the Republican presidential candidates – due to a lack of participants. “It was our intention to hold a debate after the Iowa caucuses,” the broadcaster said in a statement on Tuesday (local time). “But we always knew this would depend on the candidates and the outcome of the race.”
Former US President Donald Trump won a clear victory in the first Republican primaries in Iowa on Monday. Second place in Iowa was taken by a wide margin by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Nikki Haley, a former US ambassador to the United Nations, finished a close third. Fourth-ranked entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy dropped out that evening (local time) and endorsed Trump.
Haley refused on Tuesday to participate in future TV matches without competitor Trump. He stayed away from the first five debates, arguing that he did not need to participate because of his high poll numbers. A deadline set by ABC News and WMUR-TV passed without Haley or Trump confirming their attendance at the debate scheduled for Thursday. There was actually going to be another match on CNN on Sunday. It was initially unclear whether this would happen.
Anyone who wants to become the Republican nominee must first win internal party votes in individual states. Everything currently indicates that Trump will ultimately triumph and that a new edition of the election campaign will take place between him and Democratic incumbent Joe Biden. (sda/dpa)
