On Tuesday morning, a wrong-way driver drove on the A2 near Basel. According to the Basel-Stadt cantonal police, the 62-year-old Swiss woman drove towards Germany in the Black Forest Tunnel around 8:30 am. Initially she was in the correct lane.
But for reasons still unclear, she turned around at customs and drove back in the wrong direction. The maneuver caused the wrong-way driver to almost collide with two oncoming vehicles. According to the cantonal police, it posed an equal danger to other traffic.
It is still unclear why the woman turned around in the tunnel. However, the focus of the research is on a medical cause. After the driver was stopped by a traffic police patrol, she was taken to University Hospital for explanation. A blood and urine sample was also ordered.
The wrong-way driver had to hand in her ticket on the spot. The 62-year-old was also reported to the public prosecutor’s office in Basel-Stadt. (Mrs)
