More than 10,000 people demonstrated against the AfD in Essen and Leipzig. According to police, around 6,700 demonstrators took part in a protest march in Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia, on Monday evening.

Many in Essen carried banners with inscriptions such as: “Don’t let the Nazis march or participate in the government” or “Colorful instead of worthless brown.” Among the participants were groups such as ‘Granny’s Against the Right’ and the DGB Youth. The alliance ‘Essen resists itself’, supported by left-wing and civil organisations, called for this.

In their announcement, the initiators explicitly referred to a report by media company Correctiv about the participation of AfD officials and individual members of the Values ​​Union in a meeting of radical right parties in Potsdam last year. This weekend, tens of thousands of people took to the streets against the right during various demonstrations throughout the country.

The protest in Leipzig was not only against the AfD, but also against the ultra-conservative Union of Values. The police initially estimated the number of participants at around 5,000.
