A family feud in Germany has gotten out of hand. One evening in April last year, police were called to an apartment in the western Ebersberg neighborhood. There they meet an already “extremely aggressive” 25-year-old who allegedly threatened his partner and his mother-in-law. This is stated in the indictment, according to the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” (“SZ”).
Now the case ended up at the Ebersberg court, where the man had to answer for, among other things, attacks on law enforcement officers. “Your actions were simply underground,” Judge Benjamin Lenhart accused the defendant. During the course of the evening, he repeatedly lost control of himself – resulting in three police officers being injured and him spending a night at the station.
The recording of a police officer’s body camera allowed everyone involved in the court to participate in the altercation – much to the chagrin of the suspect. The 30-minute video showed him insulting his mother-in-law and repeatedly provoking the police officers.
He told officers at the time that he had already drunk six to eight beers that day. An alcohol test early the next morning showed a level of approximately 1.1 per mille. According to the man’s lawyer, he must have had approximately two per mille during the argument. This probably also led to his failure. He had to spend every day with ‘that old bitch’, as he called his mother-in-law. He allegedly threatened to kill his partner, a police officer said, according to the “SZ”.
When the officers tried to take him out of the apartment, he fought back tooth and nail. He allegedly bit one police officer on the thigh and spat on another. He also insulted the officers, kicked them and tried to headbutt them. Six police officers were able to overpower the man and take him to a sobering cell.
In court, the defendant appeared contrite but silent: “I would like to sincerely apologize to the police officers for my disproportionate and inappropriate behavior,” he said, according to “SZ.” He made no further comment. His attorney justified the incident with his client’s heavy drinking and the stress of living with his mother-in-law. This has now been moved outside.
Although the police officer testifying in court accepts the defendant’s apology, he warns him: “It is not possible to attack rescue workers who are just doing their job.” The suspect receives a suspended prison sentence of one year and six months. Due to a previous, unpaid fine for driving without a driver’s license, he will receive an extra three weeks according to the ‘SZ’. The man must also pay 1,500 euros to the traffic police of the Ebersberg district. (gs)
