The case shocked the whole world in 2008: Josef Fritzl (88) had held his daughter captive in the basement of the Austrian Amstetten for 24 years, raped her repeatedly and fathered seven children with her. In 2009, Fritzl was sentenced to life in prison.

Now forensic psychiatrist Heidi Kastner has drawn up a new report on the man. She comes to the conclusion: Fritzl – who changed his name behind bars – is now harmless. He is physically weak and only moves with a walker.

As a pop star on TV

He now also suffers from dementia and apparently lives in some kind of fantasy world and talks to the television. According to the Austrian media, she reports that her client has cognitive confusion, which is sometimes ‘completely there’ and then claims to have been part of a discussion program on television.

Sometimes he claims to have appeared on a show as a pop star, or “that he just had an important business meeting outside.”

Could he come to the nursing home?

Only: where do you take Fritzl? Kastner suggests moving him to a nursing home, which amounts to parole. He is currently in an institution for mentally disturbed offenders. A transfer to a normal prison would be problematic because of his physical vulnerability.

Now a court must decide where he should go. According to the Kleine Zeitung, expert Kastner says that Fritzl’s age-related disease “overshadows his abnormality.” It is also possible that he will be permanently housed in a prison hospital. (neo)
