Several injured parties have filed a class action lawsuit against Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of the weight-loss injection Ozempic and its sister drug Wegovy. The Daily Mail reports this.
About a dozen people participated: all accused the manufacturer of developing gastroparesis after using the injection. This is a paralysis of the stomach whereby food is no longer properly digested and transported to the intestines.
That’s not all: an Ozempic user suffered serious intestinal injuries, had to undergo an eight-hour emergency operation and will suffer from diarrhea for the rest of her life, the portal reports.
According to the lawsuit, doctors said the woman would be in pain “for the rest of her life” and would “never have solid stools again.” The plaintiffs now accuse the manufacturer of not providing sufficient information about the risks of the syringe.
Mother of two Brea Hand (23) is one of the women who filed a lawsuit against Novo Nordisk. She says she suffered from gastroparesis after being prescribed Ozempic last May for weight loss and to treat prediabetes.
The Oklahoma woman suffered from nausea, vomiting and constipation before ending up in the intensive care unit on her fifth visit to the hospital.
“They said my body was so acidic that if I had waited another day I wouldn’t have survived,” Hand said in her lawsuit. “It was scary. It was painful. I have never experienced pain like that in my entire life and I never want to experience it again.”
Both Ozempic and Wegovy were originally developed for people with type 2 diabetes. Ozempic should be injected once a week into the subcutaneous fatty tissue of the upper arm, stomach or thigh. Because it also suppresses appetite, it is hyped as a diet aid.
Another lawsuit reported by the Daily Mail is against Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Mounjaro, another weight loss injection. One woman says she developed gastroparesis after the injection, which caused her to vomit so much “that some of her teeth fell out.” Nine lawsuits are still pending against the manufacturer.
According to an American lawyer, his law firm is supporting about a hundred clients who are suing the manufacturers of weight-loss injections. He thinks this is just the tip of the iceberg. “I have no doubt that thousands more cases will follow.” (neo)
