After the Fagradalsfjall volcano on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula spewed lava before Christmas and the village of Grindavik, home to 4,000, had to be evacuated, the town has been ordered evacuated again.
Authorities ordered the renewed evacuation of the city of 4,000 residents on Saturday, according to a statement from the Civil Defense Authority, based on a risk assessment by the National Weather Office.
All people must leave Grindavik by Monday evening, from then on it is forbidden to stay there. The place is still classified as dangerous after the November earthquakes and there is also an increased risk of eruptions.
The earthquakes a few days before Christmas caused extensive damage in the city, including deep cracks in the streets. According to reports in the Icelandic media, a worker fell into one of these crevices a few days ago; the search for him has since been halted without him being found. (SDA)
