What allegedly happened to a British Airways pilot sounds like something out of a crime series. When he went to the supermarket during a layover in Johannesburg, South Africa, he was kidnapped by strangers.

As the British newspaper “The Sun” reports, the pilot fell victim to a nasty trick. He was approached in the supermarket parking lot. A woman who supposedly needed help said she needed help carrying her bags. As he tried to help, a group of men grabbed him. They put him in a car and drove away.

Account emptied

It initially remained unclear how long the pilot was held and where exactly he was taken. However, the newspaper reports that he was tortured for “several hours” until he finally cleared his account to the bandits. But even after giving thousands of pounds to the criminals, he was not released.

Instead, the hijackers contacted the pilot’s wife. They told her that they would continue to arrest and torture her husband unless she also cleared her account. Only then was he released.

The kidnapping took place not far from the pilot’s accommodation in the Melrose Arch area, which is actually considered a safe area. After the hijacking, the airline warned the rest of the crew. British Airways emphasized to the newspaper: “We support our colleague and the local authorities in their investigations.” (Mrs)
