Berliners must finally feel safe again. “I want everyone in Berlin, but especially women, to be able to move around the city safely at night,” Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner (51) said in an interview with the “Tagesspiegel” in September last year.
The reason: a rape in Görlitzer Park. Three men, two 22-year-olds and a 21-year-old, had abused a woman in front of her husband. The case made headlines across the country.
And the mayor promised improvements. Because Görlitzer Park in general is a problem. The number of crimes that take place there every day is “unacceptable”, Wenger said. More bright and well-maintained parks are needed in Görlitzer Park.
Now the next rape. Again in the Görlitzer Park. Three men again. And again the victim was allegedly forced to perform oral sex, the prosecutor explained to “T-Online”. The parallels with the first rape are striking. The police are investigating.
The park in the Kreuzberg district is also regularly in the news, mainly because of the many drug dealers. Many Berliners avoid the park, especially when it gets dark. Including, for example, the daughter of Federal Minister Cem Özdemir (58).
“I have a 17-year-old daughter who has been telling me for a long time that she does not want to go to Görlitzer Park with her friends. Even if they have boys with them,” the Green politician told “Bild” last year.
The park was built “in the early 1990s on the site of the former Görlitz train station,” the city writes about the facility. And further: “Today there are extensive lawns, various sports and playgrounds and a popular petting zoo near Glogauer Strasse.”
There are no problems with criminals. The police are almost constantly present near the park. The problem: they have almost no chance against the drug dealers. These hide the medications well. In bushes, in the ground. And even if they do catch a dealer, it’s just one of many.
