«You know very well that you do not need an invitation to come to your beloved Argentina. Even at the risk of saying something unnecessary, I invite you to visit our beloved homeland,” said the letter published by the President’s Office on Thursday. “As president, I believe your visit can bring peace and brotherhood to Argentinians.”

During the election campaign, the ultra-liberal Milei sharply criticized Pope Francis, calling him a communist. There has long been speculation that the head of the Catholic Church would travel to Argentina. In an interview last year, Francis said there were plans for a visit.

Since taking office almost eleven years ago, the former Archbishop of Buenos Aires has not visited his own homeland once. The reasons are mysterious. (SDA)
