British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has convened his cabinet for consultations.

According to media reports, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak (43) convened his cabinet at short notice on Thursday evening for telephone consultations. This probably concerns upcoming joint military attacks with the US against the Houthi rebels in Yemen, as Sky News and the Guardian report, among others.

There have been increasing signs of a response from the US and its allies recently. In recent days, British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps has repeatedly warned of the consequences if the attacks do not stop. US National Security Council Communications Director John Kirby warned the Houthis on Thursday that they would face consequences if they did not stop their attacks.

Important trade route

Since the outbreak of the Gaza war between Israel and Hamas, the Houthis have repeatedly attacked ships with Israeli connections in the Red Sea. According to the US, a total of 27 attacks have been carried out since November 19. No deaths have been reported so far. However, major shipping companies are increasingly avoiding the important trade route.

According to the Houthis, the US has already intervened and killed at least ten rebels. On Tuesday, US and British forces also shot down 18 drones and three missiles fired by the Houthis.

About ten percent of all world trade passes through the Red Sea. The Suez Canal connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea and is the shortest sea route between Asia and Europe. (SDA)
