Application submitted: Duda wants to pardon convicted PiS politicians again

The President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, speaks during a press statement at the Presidential Palace. He wants to pardon two legally convicted former members of the expelled national-conservative PiS government for the second time.

Duda said in Warsaw on Thursday that he had submitted a corresponding application to Justice Minister Adam Bodnar. The president had previously met with the wives of the two PiS politicians.

The dispute between the new center-left government of Donald Tusk and the former PiS ruling camp over the arrest of former Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski and his deputy Maciej Wasik has brought Poland to the brink of a state crisis.

The two politicians were arrested on Tuesday and taken to prison after initially seeking protection in the presidential palace. The PiS describes the two as “political prisoners”. Kaminski went on hunger strike on the first day of his detention.

Kaminski and Wasik were sentenced to two years in prison for abuse of office in December after an appeal by a district court in Warsaw. Duda granted the two pardons after an initial trial in 2015. However, the Supreme Court declared this pardon unlawful, because the appeal procedure was still ongoing at that time.

Duda announced his decision to pardon the two for a second time, shortly before a planned demonstration by PiS supporters in Warsaw. According to Polish media reports, the party expects up to 50,000 participants. (SDA)
