The Swedish Minister of Civil Protection strikes a dramatic note. At a security conference last weekend in the ski village of Sälen, Carl-Oskar Bohlin, 38, said: “Many have said it before me, but let me say it in an official capacity, more clearly and with naked clarity: there would be war in Sweden.”

All Swedish citizens, employees, entrepreneurs and managers, everyone should ask themselves the question: “Who are you when war comes?” Preparations for a possible war must be made as quickly as possible. “Everyone needs to understand that in the situation we find ourselves in, time can be our most valuable resource.” Is Bohlin exaggerating? According to military strategist Mauro Mantovani (60), the warning should be taken seriously.

Everyone has to prepare

The politician from the conservative Moderate Collection Party gave several examples of how to prepare for an emergency: local authorities must develop emergency water plans and guarantee the supply of food, heat and electricity. Emergency authorities must recruit volunteers to expand their work in the event of war. Individuals should consider joining a voluntary defense organization.

The minister sees Ukraine as a model for a society that can defend itself against an attack. Such a united resistance is only possible “if the vast majority are aware of the situation and understand what it is about,” Bohlin explains. Therefore, the Swedes, who are used to peace, must get clarity about their situation.

The authorities should also increase the pace. What can be done quickly should be done quickly; there should be no unnecessarily long discussions. Bohlin: “Good enough tomorrow is better than perfect in five years.”

“Take the Kremlin seriously”

Is Bohlin exaggerating or is Sweden actually in danger? Military strategist Mauro Mantovani describes Bohlin’s speech as a domestic political wake-up call. “It is likely to be coordinated with his government, and it is independent of the fact that Sweden does not currently enjoy formal NATO protection under Article 5.”

It is an urgent appeal to fellow citizens to mentally prepare for the war against Russia. “He implicitly calls for an immediate start to the reconstruction of Sweden’s Cold War defense system.”

You cannot rule out war, says Mantovani. “You have to take the Kremlin seriously: it threatened to have serious consequences if Sweden joined NATO, and after World War II there were repeated military provocations from the Russian side.”

Moscow threatens

After announcing its intention to join NATO, Moscow issued a huge threat against Sweden and Finland. The Kremlin talked about stationing nuclear weapons on the border and in the Baltic Sea. Viktor Tatarintsev, 69, the Russian ambassador in Stockholm, explained that Sweden was taking a step towards the “abyss” if it applied to join NATO. Sweden and Finland should expect to become “legitimate targets” of retaliation if they were to join NATO.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg (64) expects Sweden to be admitted to the defense alliance in July. Turkey had blocked Sweden’s accession to NATO for months. The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Turkish Parliament has now approved the expansion. However, the Turkish parliament still needs a yes vote.
