According to the Henley Passport Index, which has been tracking global travel freedoms for 19 years, the Swiss passport is not among the top passports in the world. Citizens of France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Singapore enjoy visa-free access on arrival to 194 countries around the world. This means number 1 in the Henley Passport Index 2024. This is the highest number since the index was surveyed.
For the Swiss passport, there are still 190 countries that allow visa-free entry or visa on arrival. This puts the country in fifth place in the index, together with Greece and Malta.
Finland, Sweden and South Korea are in second place, followed by Denmark, Ireland and Austria in third place, and in fourth place: Belgium, Great Britain, Luxembourg, Norway and Portugal.
The Swiss passport has improved by two places compared to previous years: in 2022 it was 7th and last year it was 6th.
Over the past five years, the Asian countries Japan and Singapore have been in first place. The new top 5 represents a remarkable increase in the travel freedom of Europeans.
The Henley Index is based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). There are more of these types of indices in which Switzerland also scores better. In the Arton Passport Index, Switzerland once again achieved a podium finish with third place.
The Swiss passport has been among the best in the world for years when it comes to global travel freedoms. It is not enough to reach first place in any comparison index.
