Storms in the US: five deaths in severe winter storms

At least five people have died in winter storms in the US. The dead included an 81-year-old woman whose mobile home in Alabama was reportedly hit by a tornado. Meanwhile, large parts of the country prepared for more snowfall and extremely low temperatures on Wednesday.

Tornadoes uprooted trees and tore roofs off buildings in northern Florida on Tuesday. Weather warnings were in effect for dozens of states, from California on the West Coast to Maine on the East Coast. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the reason is an Arctic cold front from Canada that could bring the coldest temperatures yet this winter.

More than 400,000 households in the US

Storms had previously swept across the US, bringing tornadoes in the south, flooding in the east and heavy snowstorms in the northern Great Lakes region. Hundreds of flights had to be canceled and a state of emergency was declared in several states.

According to the website Poweroutage, more than 400,000 households were without power on Wednesday morning (local time), including 140,000 in New York state.

The NWS forecast called for “several feet” of fresh snow and high winds up to 60 miles per hour in the Northwest and parts of the Rocky Mountains. Farther east, “blizzard conditions” were expected for the Midwest.
