The man and woman were found dead on Tuesday, the coldest day of winter in France so far, in a suburb of Paris and in Carpentras in the south of the country, the newspaper ‘Le Monde’ reported on Wednesday.

The suspicion that the two had frozen to death would have to be clarified by an autopsy. The man was found in a cellar in Boulogne-Billancourt, where he had apparently found shelter with the patience of the owner. The woman in Carpentras died on the street under a blanket.

As a result of the cold wave, many French regions have activated an emergency plan and are providing additional housing for the homeless. In Paris, for example, emergency workers also take to the streets to support people in danger.
