Three people were killed in severe storms in the US on Tuesday, authorities said. The deaths were reported in the southern United States after hurricanes hit there. The north, on the other hand, was plagued by strong winds and snowstorms; More than 890,000 customers, mainly in the eastern United States, lost electricity on Tuesday evening, according to the website poweroutage.us.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), heavy rains causing flooding, gusts exceeding 50 miles per hour and thunderstorms are hitting the East Coast from the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast.
“Don’t underestimate it,” New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy warned in local media about the storm. Murphy described the storm as “unusual.” The weather also caused Air Force 2, the plane of Vice President Kamala Harris (59), to be diverted to a different landing location than usual.
Meanwhile, tornadoes ripped through the southeastern United States. Local authorities say one person has died at a trailer park in North Carolina. South of Atlanta, Georgia, one person died when a tree fell on a vehicle, according to police. In Alabama, an 81-year-old woman died when a tornado struck her mobile home, local authorities said.
Heavy snowfall of two to five centimeters per hour was also reported in the northern and central United States. In the Northwest, a blizzard warning was issued for the Cascade Range and the Olympic Mountains for the first time in a decade, according to a report in the New York Times. The NWS expected a persistent snowstorm on Wednesday.
The weather situation also had consequences for air traffic. According to the website flightaware.com, more than 1,300 flights were canceled in the US on Tuesday, and another 8,600 flights were delayed – although some of the flight cancellations occurred due to inspections of Boeing 737 Max aircraft. An Alaska Airlines flight flew out of part of the wall of such a plane.
According to scientists, man-made global warming is making extreme weather events more common. In addition, weather patterns are more difficult to predict due to climate change. (AFP)
