“Don’t underestimate it,” New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy warned in local media about the storm. Murphy described the storm as “unusual.” The weather also caused Air Force 2, the plane of Vice President Kamala Harris (59), to be diverted to a different landing location than usual.

Meanwhile, tornadoes ripped through the southeastern United States. Local authorities say one person has died at a trailer park in North Carolina. South of Atlanta, Georgia, one person died when a tree fell on a vehicle, according to police. In Alabama, an 81-year-old woman died when a tornado struck her mobile home, local authorities said.

The NWS expected a persistent snowstorm on Wednesday.

More than 1,300 flights cancelled

The weather situation also had consequences for air traffic. According to the website flightaware.com, more than 1,300 flights were canceled in the US on Tuesday, and another 8,600 flights were delayed – although some of the flight cancellations occurred due to inspections of Boeing 737 Max aircraft.
